Adds 15% VAT on top of a VAT-exclusive (net) amount.
- Net (excl. VAT)
- SAR 1,000.00
- VAT amount
- SAR 150.00
- Gross (incl. VAT)
- SAR 1,150.00
On SAR 1,000.00, 15% VAT is SAR 150.00, for a gross total of SAR 1,150.00.
The two calculations
- Add VAT (net → gross): VAT = net × 15%, and gross = net + VAT. On SAR 1,000, VAT is SAR 150 and the gross is SAR 1,150.
- Remove VAT (gross → net): net = gross ÷ 1.15, and VAT = gross − net. On SAR 1,150 inclusive, the net is SAR 1,000 and the VAT is SAR 150.
How VAT works in Saudi Arabia (15%)
Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in Saudi Arabia on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5% and raised to 15% effective 1 July 2020. It is administered by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) and applies to most goods and services supplied in the Kingdom.
A business must register for VAT once its taxable supplies exceed the mandatory registration threshold of SAR 375,000 over 12 months; voluntary registration is available from SAR 187,500. Registered businesses charge 15% VAT on taxable sales (output tax) and reclaim the VAT they pay on business purchases (input tax), remitting the difference to ZATCA through periodic VAT returns.
Some supplies are zero-rated (0%) — such as qualifying exports and certain medicines and medical equipment — while others are exempt, such as certain financial services and residential rents. Always confirm the correct treatment for your specific supply with ZATCA or a tax adviser.
Frequently asked questions
- The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%, in force since 1 July 2020 (it was 5% from 1 January 2018). Certain supplies are zero-rated (0%) or exempt, but most goods and services are taxed at the standard 15% rate.
- To add VAT, multiply the net amount by 15% (×0.15) to get the VAT, then add it to the net for the gross. For example, SAR 1,000 × 15% = SAR 150 VAT, giving a gross of SAR 1,150.
- Divide the VAT-inclusive (gross) amount by 1.15 to get the net amount, then subtract the net from the gross to find the VAT. For example, SAR 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 1,000 net, so the VAT is SAR 150.
- Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies exceed SAR 375,000 over any 12-month period. Voluntary registration is allowed from SAR 187,500. Registered businesses must file VAT returns and issue ZATCA-compliant tax invoices, including the phased ZATCA e-invoicing (Fatoora) requirements.
- No. This tool gives a quick standard-rate (15%) calculation for general guidance only. Zero-rated, exempt, and reverse-charge supplies are treated differently. For filing and compliance, confirm with ZATCA or a qualified tax adviser.
