How corporate tax works in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia levies corporate income tax on the taxable profits of resident companies and permanent establishments of foreign companies. The tax is administered by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA).

The standard rate is 20% of taxable profit. In mixed-ownership entities the tax applies to the share not owned by GCC nationals; the GCC-owned share is instead subject to Zakat at 2.5% of the Zakat base, so the two regimes are apportioned rather than stacked.

Taxable profit starts from accounting net profit, then is adjusted for non-deductible expenses, exempt income and available incentives. Companies in special economic zones, or holding regional headquarters (RHQ) status, may qualify for incentive regimes — eligibility is confirmed case by case.

Companies file an annual income tax return with ZATCA and settle any liability within the statutory deadline for their fiscal year. Confirm the current deadline and your exact treatment with ZATCA or a qualified tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the corporate tax rate in Saudi Arabia?
The standard corporate income tax rate is 20% of taxable profit. In entities with GCC-national ownership, the GCC-owned share is instead subject to Zakat at 2.5%, with the foreign-owned share taxed at 20%.
How is corporate tax calculated?
Multiply your taxable profit (accounting net profit adjusted for tax purposes) by 20%. For example, on a taxable profit of SAR 500,000 the tax is SAR 100,000.
What is Zakat and who pays it?
Zakat is a religious levy, not an income tax, collected by ZATCA at 2.5% of the Zakat base. It applies to the Saudi and GCC-national owned share of a company, in place of income tax on that share.
Do special economic zone or RHQ companies pay differently?
Companies with regional headquarters status and companies in special economic zones may qualify for incentive packages, such as relief on qualifying activities for a defined period. Eligibility conditions are confirmed case by case with the relevant authorities.
When do companies file and pay corporate tax?
Companies file an annual income tax return with ZATCA and pay any liability within the statutory deadline for their fiscal year. Confirm the current deadline with ZATCA, as e-invoicing and filing obligations continue to evolve.
