How US federal corporate tax works

The United States levies a federal corporate income tax at a flat 21% rate on taxable income. The flat rate was set by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, replacing the former graduated brackets, and applies to C corporations for tax years beginning after December 31, 2017.

Because the federal rate is flat, every dollar of taxable profit is taxed at 21% — there is no exemption band. Most states levy a separate state corporate income or franchise tax, which this calculator does not model.

Taxable income starts from book income, then is adjusted for deductions, credits and elections (for example bonus depreciation under Section 168(k) or Section 179 expensing). Pass-through entities — S corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships — are generally not taxed at the entity level; their owners report the income on personal returns.

C corporations generally must pay quarterly estimated federal tax and file Form 1120 by the 15th day of the 4th month after the tax year ends. Every company should confirm its filing calendar and combined federal/state position with a qualified US tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions

What is the US federal corporate tax rate?
The federal corporate income tax rate is a flat 21% on taxable income, set by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and in effect since the 2018 tax year. There are no federal exemption bands.
How is federal corporate tax calculated?
Multiply your taxable profit (book income adjusted for tax purposes) by 21%. For example, on a taxable profit of $500,000 the federal tax is $105,000.
Does this calculator include state taxes?
No. Most states levy their own corporate income or franchise tax, at rates and bases that vary by state. Combine this federal estimate with your state rules for a full picture.
Do pass-through businesses pay corporate tax?
Generally no. S corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships pass income through to owners, who pay individual income tax (with a possible qualified business income deduction). C corporations pay the 21% entity-level tax.
When do US corporations file and pay?
C corporations file Form 1120 and generally must make quarterly estimated tax payments. Returns are due by the 15th day of the 4th month after the tax year ends. Confirm your exact obligations with a qualified tax adviser.
